Kooper Kain…

A few months ago, an outfit from Vancouver called Kooper Kain called and asked permission to cover Black Dog There, the song of course not the whole album. Although I thought it was an unusual choice of song to cover, you know, nothing like a top forty track, I agreed and a while later, they sent me the revisited song on the net.
Wohh !
A 200% version of the original thing. The sense of being lost in the cosmos was far more bone chilling, the emptiness, the anguish, the solitude…
Anyways, the cover was part of a CD which was released not long ago. They sent me a copy and I think everybody should at least check them out on MySpace.
Formed in 2003 by MAX ARNASON ( Kooper Kain ) and MARTIN LOWE ( Lowenoize ), this unit sounds truly different although all of their influences are self-admittedly noticeable. Particularly the vocals and Max’s way of using vibrato which lends him a style all his own. But the overall ambiance conveyed by Martin’s guitar parts is what defines this music ( in my opinion ) as pictorial, suggesting images and landscapes from the “Dark” for the most part, but without the gore.
One thing is clear, the combination of these guy’s musical character conspire to create a unique sound, a hard thing to achieve these days.
They are indie and self released if I’m not mistaken, so I suggest to honor their effort and buy their album called… ( darn, I forgot my copy in the Boxmobile last night…).

Cheers mates !!

Dis donc Francis…

Interpol…

I was called recently to write music for a 2 TV ads, and it occurred to me that I never thought of linking you guys to the ad music site. It’s called Interpol and there’s a four spot demo you can have a look at. The Heineken spot with the Tom Jones wannabe features yours truly on vocals and so does the Saputo spot, probably the only time in my life where being fluent in Italian profited me professionally.
The funny thing here is ( and I want your take on this ) most people I’ve worked with in the ad field know The Box and I keep being told by them :
“Ha! That sounds so much like The Box ! We’d recognize your sound anywhere…”
And that’s without me even singing ! Personally, I don’t get it…
So go to www.interpolmusicforvisuals.com and let me know what you make of it.

PS: the album progresses. ( no pun ! )

Franchement, j’y comprends rien…
Et vous, qu’en pensez-vous ?

Jean Marc

PS: L’album avance toujours.
